Celebrate Clean Energy Week with FPL SolarNow

Across Florida, solar power is helping to protect our environment, and that’s something to celebrate. FPL joins organizations around the country to commemorate National Clean Energy Week (NCEW) from September 20 – 24, 2021 to raise awareness of alternative and renewable energy and their impact on reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions. It is more important now than ever to recognize the effects of climate change on our planet, and that’s why FPL is leading the charge toward a clean energy future in Florida. Plus, did you know that solar energy is environmentally the cleanest energy?

The first step in making a difference is educating the public about the importance of clean energy. As part of the FPL SolarNow program, 70+ local parks, zoos and museums have been transformed into outdoor living classrooms throughout the state for people of all ages to learn about and see solar energy in action. At these locations, you can see solar installations – such as solar trees and solar canopies – up close right in your own backyard. These innovative structures not only generate shade but also feed clean energy back into the community.

Science Meets Solar

The Cox Science Center & Aquarium is home to a ton of interesting exhibits as well as three solar trees. Make sure to check out the FPL SolarScape along the Fisher Family Science Trail to learn more about renewable energy. The solar tree also has an augmented reality exhibit featuring “Sunny,” an interactive 3D animated solar tree that teaches you how solar energy works.

Two towering solar trees greet you at the Frost Museum of Science entrance where your learning journey begins. Bring your experience full circle at the interactive solar exhibit at the museum’s rooftop FPL Solar Terrace, “The Sun Spot.”

Wild About Solar

Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens is home to one of the largest FPL SolarNow projects in Florida. While checking out the honey badgers and giraffes, a solar canopy provides shaded parking for visitors.

In addition to giraffes and kangaroos, Brevard Zoo is home to three unique solar trees. While you are visiting the animals, these solar installations are generating clean, emissions-free energy for local homes and businesses.

Cheers to Clean Energy

The solar canopy at the St. Augustine Distillery provides much-needed shade on a sunny Florida day. Get a taste of history where the story of FPL has come full circle. The building where the distillery is housed was originally the FPL ice plant, and now showcases a shining example of how the company is bottling up Florida’s sunshine.

Solar Tranquility

Nestled along the Manatee River, Palmetto Estuary Preserve is a hidden gem. Nature lovers can park under a solar canopy and watch native wading birds such as the wood stork, snowy egret and Roseate spoonbill.

Leading the Charge in Clean Energy

As we celebrate Clean Energy Week, FPL is dedicated to making Florida a leader in sustainability. In June, we said goodbye to coal by dismantling FPL’s last coal plant in Florida just as the company surpassed the 40% completion of its ’30-by-30’ plan to install 30 million solar panels by 2030.

Soon, the world’s largest solar-powered battery in Manatee County will begin serving customers, and we’ll turn our attention to an innovative green hydrogen pilot project – which could unlock the potential for a 100% carbon-free energy future.

It’s all part of a commitment to build a more resilient and sustainable energy future that all of us can depend on.
