MAST@FIU is an innovative, one-of-a-kind institution with a focus on creating a better future for marine wildlife and our environment, which closely aligns with our own mission. Empowering the Next Generation

The Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) is the only public high school in Florida that has a collaborative partnership with a public university and is one of only ten high schools listed on the 2023 Florida Green School Designated School Directory. Located in North Miami, on the Biscayne Bay Campus of Florida International University (FIU), MAST@FIU helps prepare students for future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The FPL SolarNow solar canopy on campus provides students with shade in between classes and firsthand experience in STEM as they monitor the canopy’s emissions-free solar energy production and the building’s overall energy consumption.

 

Creating a Clean Environment

MAST@FIU is also the only magnet school in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) that focuses on marine and environmental science. With this emphasis on serving as stewards of our environment, students learn the skills to help bring about innovative solutions that will keep our planet clean for years to come.

FPL SolarNow’s solar canopy supports these same goals through the production of low-cost, emissions-free energy that doesn’t result in harmful pollutants. By investing in state-of-the-art technology that can use renewable resources, FPL is showing how we can generate power for our communities in a sustainable, eco-friendly way.

First opened in April of 2023, this new solar canopy symbolizes a joint commitment between M-DCPS, FIU and FPL to sustainability and creating a brighter future for Floridians.

By unifying the efforts of the public and private sectors, we’re helping create opportunities for real change. This partnership further demonstrates our commitment to STEM education as well as our belief that investing in education-related projects such as this will lead to brighter and more productive futures for all.
