SolarNow is Heating Up at Frost Museum of Science

Florida Power & Light Company’s SolarNow program advances solar in our communities by partnering with organizations that also seek to educate, inspire and make a difference.

That’s why we’re so excited to join forces with the new Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Downtown Miami, a leading science museum dedicated to sharing the power of science, sparking wonder and investigation, and fueling innovation for the future.

FPL is all about fueling energy for the future, so we’ve created a solar energy footprint at Frost Science, complete with not one but two solar trees and a solar farm.

The partnership is an exciting new chapter in science education engagement that will promote technology, innovation and sustainability, as well as inspire the next great generation of scientists, engineers and mathematicians.

Celebrating Frost Museum’s Solar Trees

As you might know, our unique solar trees and canopies are made possible by FPL SolarNow program participants.

The solar trees at the Frost Museum were actually among our very first “planted” in June 2017, right in Museum Plaza by the front entrance. Check out the video below to see the installation!

The opening of the Frost Museum and the launch of our new solar trees was an exciting time for South Florida. We celebrated it with the first group of Frost Museum summer campers with an interactive lesson on solar power during FPL’s “Day of Solar.”

Using the FPL solar trees on Science Plaza as their inspiration, campers built a series of solar powered devices, from windmills to puppies, under the watchful eye of FPL engineers. They raced Solar Rover cars they built during a friendly competition on the plaza next to the solar trees.

The kids had a blast learning, building and exploring. We might have even inspired a new generation of scientists like a similar field trip did for Irene White when she was a student. She’s now senior director of external affairs for FPL.

“I have fond childhood memories of sitting in a cool, dark auditorium looking up at all the stars in the universe. By far the best field trips ever,” White said. “I know these experiences coupled with great science and math teachers nurtured my love for the sciences at a very young age. Studying engineering in college just seemed natural and the right thing to do.”
